This is a tutorial on how to use the MoGrapher inside the MoTools geometry node toolkit for Blender.

I’m a long time user of Cinema 4D, and I really love its amazing MoGraph toolkit. So when I learned Blender and the Geometry Nodes, the first thing I tried was to replicate the Cinema 4D’s workflow inside Blender.

It turned out it wasn’t so easy, but in the end I think I managed to recreate most of the tools and functions.

The MoTools are a library asset you’re going to install inside the Asset Browser. Then, using Geometry Nodes, you just have to drag and drop the tools you need to animate your scene.

In this tutorial, we create a very simple scene from scratch using the Blender Kit Addon and then we animate the toy train only with the MoTools.

You’ll learn how to use the MoGrapher, one of the most interesting tool in the toolkit, which is going to make “MoGraph” everything in your scene. Then you can animate it using effector and falloff to get the animation you need.

We’ll start with a simple fade in animation, with the train pieces landing gently on the ground, then we’ll see how to make it more dynamic, how to animate every single individually, how to automate the animation and create some bounce effects.

Pardon my French! Please, keep in mind that I’m French and I live in France, so recording this tutorial in English is not easy 😉 Please pardon my hesitations and my accent!

A few prerequesites (this list is not exhaustive)

  • You have installed the MoTools inside Blender
  • You must know how to use Blender, at least as a beginner
  • Having (tried to) use the Geometry Nodes

All these files are available with the course.

Don’t hesitate to show the animation you make with the tools !

Animating a toy train with MoTools

Creating a basic scene with the Blender Kit Addon

The Blender Kit Addon is a free addon we can use to create a populate a scene quickly.

Introducting the MoGrapher

The MoGrapher is going to make every piece of an object, or every object of a collection, ready to animate with the other tools of the MoTools.

Using the Ease Falloff

The Ease Falloff is essential for any animation, smoothing the hard fall of the objects on the ground. Several options are available.

Framing the shot and creating an animation

It’s time to properly frame the shot and create the actual animation with keyframes.

Tweaking the MoGrapher

One very interesting option of the MoGrapher is able to separate every tiny piece of an object to animate it separately.

Procedural animation with the Step Time Falloff, rearranging the order

The Step Time Falloff is a very powerfull tool, able to create procedural animation, i.e animation without any keyframe.

Adding bounce and randomness

With the help of the Ease Falloff options, and adding a Random Effector, we can make our animation much more interesting.
